Domestic Violence Outreach, based in Chicago, Illinois, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preventing intimate partner violence (IPV) through a three-pronged mission: awareness, service, and prevention. Our work includes building public understanding of IPV, connecting survivors with vital service providers, and educating youth through the implementation of the CDC’s Dating Matters curriculum in middle schools.

Position Summary

The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive of Domestic Violence Outreach and is responsible for strategic leadership, programmatic oversight, financial management, staff development and supervision, fundraising, board development and relations, and day-to-day operations. The ED ensures that the organization’s mission—raising awareness of IPV, connecting victims to services, and promoting prevention through education—is achieved

through effective programming, advocacy, and partnership development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide visionary leadership and implement strategic plans aligned with the mission.
  • Serve as the primary spokesperson to stakeholders, media, and the broader community.
  • Lead organizational growth while upholding the values of awareness, service, and prevention.

Program Oversight

  • Organize and conduct educational activities in religious and civic organizations and schools.
  • Develop and support activities of IPV groups formed from educational outreach.
  • Direct the implementation of the CDC’s Dating Matters curriculum in partner schools.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with school administrators, educators, and counselors.
  • Monitor program outcomes using evidence-based practices to ensure impact and effectiveness.

Community Engagement & Partnerships

  • Cultivate partnerships with IPV service providers, schools, civic organizations, and government agencies.
  • Represent the organization at public forums, coalitions, and awareness campaigns.
  • Advocate for policies and practices that support IPV prevention and education.
  • Lead fundraising efforts including grant writing, communication by newsletters, donor cultivation, and annual giving campaigns.
  • Write and send personalized thank-you notes to donors to foster long-term relationships.
  • Develop and execute strategies to ensure diverse and sustainable funding sources.

Operations & Finance

  • Oversee budgeting, accounting, and reporting in collaboration with the Board Treasurer or finance staff.
  • Ensure the organization meets all legal, ethical, and regulatory obligations.
  • Ensure that annual State of Illinois and Federal required legal forms are completed accurately and submitted on time.
  • Manage staff (six part-time working at home) and volunteers, creating a mission-aligned, inclusive, and supportive work culture.

Board Relations

  • Develop and relate to the Board of Directors, providing regular updates on operations, finances, and strategic goals.
  • Collaborate with the Board to shape organizational vision and priorities.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, public health, social work, education, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • At least 5 years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit or mission-driven settings.
  • Demonstrated understanding of IPV and its prevention, public health programming, or youth education.
  • Proven success in fundraising, including donor cultivation and grant acquisition.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with the CDC’s Dating Matters curriculum or similar IPV prevention programs.
  • Experience working within urban school systems or with youth-serving organizations.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care and equity-focused program design.
